PHOTO/the-star.co.keThe Internally Displaced Persons Support Initiative (IDPI) has gone to court to bar disbursement of Sh6 billion by the government for resettlement and compensation.
The IDPs are instead demanding that a list of the beneficiaries be produced first and saying that the government is likely to disburse the money to fake IDPs.
“There is no information on who the beneficiaries are. Thus, the genuine IDPs will not benefit and thus their rights and fundamental freedoms are being violated,” said CEO Stephen Mbogwa.
The group on Thursday filed a case at the High Court in Nakuru.
Under the government resettlement programme, an IDP gets Sh10 000 capital to rebuild a burnt house, Sh25 000 to cater for basic reconstruction and a piece of land measuring two and a quarter acres.
Through their lawyer Wilfred Konosi, the group said that as it stands, the government lacks a proper mechanism where genuine IDPs will check whether or not they are on the compensation list.
Justice Maureen Odero decided that the court could not grant the orders till all involved parties have been served.
The court will therefore issue the advocate a notice for the mention date.
