Internally Displaced Person’s have threatened to boycott the coming elections until they are compensated.
IDPs Organizing Secretary Nelson Owegi said they are demanding Sh6 billion that was allocated to them for compensation in the last financial year.
Owegi claimed that it is almost ten years since they were displaced in 2007 yet there is no compensation.
Speaking to the press in Kisumu on Tuesday, Owegi said they want President Uhuru Kenyatta to intervene in the matter and tell them why they can’t be paid.
Owegi said the treasury had released Sh6 billion towards their compensation but to date they are yet to receive the allocations.
He said currently out of the money Sh4 billion has been diverted to other ministries.
"We have two of our members sitting in the steering committee chaired by Adan Wachu (Chairman National Consultative Coordination Committee on IDPs chairman) and they confirmed to us that out of the allocation, only Sh2 billion can be traced," he said.
Owegi said they are wondering why up to date the amount has not been sent to them after being released by the Treasury.
