The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has assured residents of Garissa County that the forthcoming general elections will be peaceful.
The commission reminded residents not to fear taking part in the exercise as the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) intense operations to smoke out Al Shabaab militia from their hideouts.
Garissa IEBC coordinator Antony Njoroge has said tight security measures will be put in place to ensure that everything runs smoothly.
He was speaking on the sidelines of a workshop attended by elections officials and agents
“We are equally concerned areas that have witnessed terror attacks in parts of Dadaab, Fafi and Ijara constituencies could have low voter turnout due to security concerns,” Njoroge said, as quoted by Star.
He also said that the commission is working in collaboration wuth the security personnel to ensure that the exercise is undertaken in a peaceful manner when that time comes.
“We are working closely with all security agencies to ensure that boting takes place and all eligible voters have a chance to cast their votes.”
His remarks were backed by Northeastern regional coordinator Mohamud Saleh who assured the residents of tight security.
