The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has barred Mombasa governor aspirant Chitavi Mkalla from contesting in the next elections over integrity.
The United Democratic Party candidate was barred for reportedly flouting the tendering procedures at the Mombasa Water and Sewerage Company while he served in 2007/8 over the award of a medical insurance cover tender.
Earlier, IEBC had cleared Chitavi at 4 pm on Friday but the certificate was later cancelled at 9 pm after recommendation by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).
In the case, Chitavi was found guilty and charged a Sh800,000 fine but he has said he appealed and the case is ongoing, which bars the IEBC grounds to bar him.
"I paid the fine but the High Court refunded the money after my appeal. I was wrongfully convicted that is why the case is ongoing," he said.
"This is not about the case. It's about some people hiding in masks trying to detract me but this will not stop Chitavi in my race to be Mombasa governor," he stated.
