Public Accounts Committee chairman Nicholas Gumbo has preservation for Sh45 billion budget prepared by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission to conduct the coming general election.

Gumbo wondered why conducting a general election in Kenya is so expensive than other countries in the developing countries.

“This budget is very outrageous and questions must be asked,” he said.

He said case studies from other countries show that Kenya is spending too much resource to conduct its electoral process.

“If you look at the budget of Tanzania or Nigeria who recently hold their polls vis a vis the number of registered voters then you wonder why IEBC is preparing such a budget,” he said.

Speaking to the press in Kisumu on Saturday, Gumbo said that as a committee they will continue to offer oversight on how public funds are utilized.

He called upon relevant committees and the treasury to be keen and look into details of how IEBC intend to use the funds they have budgeted for.

Gumbo said that Kenyans struggle to pay taxes and would wish that such money is spent efficiently.

“It will be painful that Kenyans deny themselves some services to pay taxes of which is being misused,” he said.
