The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commissioners will be in office until October 4, 2016.
This is after the IEBC and the government agreed on a later date for the commissioners to vacate office.
Government Spokesman, Eric Kiraithe said both parties noted the urgency of the matter and the need for a seamless, lawful and timely transition at the IEBC.
In a statement to newsrooms, Kiraithe said: “The meeting was marked by a spirit of patriotism, mutuality and goodwill. The IEBC delegation reiterated their undertaking to the nation to vacate from office as soon as possible, for the sake of the country.”
“Both parties noted that the new Elections (Amendment) Act 2016 only takes effect on 4th of October, 2016 and the IEBC commissioners cannot resign before then,” the statement added.
The decision was reached in a meeting between Treasury Principal Secretary Kamau Thugge and IEBC chair Ahmed Issack Hassan and commissioners Abdullahi Sharawe, Thomas Letangule and Albert Bwire.
It was held at Harambee House on Wednesday.
Already, Cord leader Raila Odinga and Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua have accused the government of laxity to have the IEBC reconstituted before the 2017 elections.
