The elections body at the same time condemned the confrontation between the police, Cord leaders and their supporters at IEBC headquarters on Monday afternoon, saying it was unnecessary.

“We are ready to update on the progress we have made towards 2017 polls and to listen to and address any concerns with all political players. CORD is one of our clients. They should make it possible to engage fruitfully and harmoniously,” read in part a statement signed by Andrew Limo, Communications and Public Affairs Manager IEBC.

The Commission acknowledged concerns raised by opposition Cord, saying it has addressed them according to the law.

“Cord has disputed the Commission's verdict on its Okoa Kenya referendum initiative and raised concerns with the conduct and management of the last elections. These are matters that are all governed by law, which the commission has pronounced itself on.”

“The Coalition has also queried the suitability of the current Commissioners to preside over the next General Elections and demanded that it be reconstituted. The mode of appointment and removal of IEBC Commissioners, like any other constitutional commission, is well within the knowledge of the Cord Coalition.”

Police officers dispersed Cord leaders Raila Odinga, Moses Wetangula, Kalonzo Musyoka and their supporters using tear gas after they attempted to forcefully access IEBC offices at Anniversary Towers in Nairobi on Monday afternoon.

Cord leaders have threatened to boycott the 2017 general elections if the current commissioners will be in office to manage the polls.
