The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on Tuesday oversaw the first student council elections at Menengai high school in Nakuru town. The electoral body conducted the exercise as a way of inculcating the value of democracy and transparency, an IEBC official said.
During the elections, a form three student was barred from voting after he was found campaigning when others were casting their votes.
Nakuru Town East elections coordinator Joyce Ekuam said the exercise was a reflection of what happens during the national general election.
“They held pre-election seminar with all candidates in order to sensitise them on rules and regulations to be followed during campaigns,” the IEBC official said.
“Unsuccessful candidates can launch an appeal to the IEBC through the school management if they feel that there was any irregularity,” said Ekuam. Menengai high school Principal David Gwenyini said that the elections have improved the relationship between teachers and students.
