4,094 prisoners have been registered by the Independent Electoral and boundaries commission (IEBC). This is according to the commission’s chairperson Wafula Chabukati.

The registration exercise was conducted in 109 prisons across the country.

Kamiti Maximum Security Prison recorded the highest figure with 585 enrolments.

Others in the top-five in terms of number of registered voters are Shimo la Tewa Prison (257), Naivasha Main Prison (182), Embu Main Prison (173) and Meru Main Prison (164).

A total of 1,856 inmates applied for transfers because they had already been registered before they were put behind bars.

Chebukati noted 11 prisons were not involved in the process since they lacked eligible voters.

The centres include: Shimo Borstal, Maara, Marimanti, Mutomo, Oloitoktok, Shikusa Borstal Institution, Vihiga Prison, Kehancha Prison/Kendege, Nyamira Prison, Kamiti YTC and Kamae Girl’s Borstal Institution.

The registration process was conducted between February 20 and 27, 2017.
