[Photo: ntv.co.ke] Independent Electoral Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has become a playground for the politicians who now call the tune leaving IEBC's independence highly diluted.Lawyer and University of Nairobi Tutorial Fellow Joshua Kiptoo has said the electoral agency has nowadays come under the control of politicians and cannot even assert its authority on simple matters.Kiptoo speaking to KTN News on Wednesday said that the politicians now dictate the goings on of the agency."The process we had in 2016 that culminated to the committee led by Senators Kiraitu Murungi and James Orengo was where the rain started beating the IEBC. Politicians took over the commission and they are now the ones who dictate its narrative," said Kiptoo. He added: "If IEBC was pragmatic enough, it ought to have taken the cue from there and turn the heat on the same politicians and tell them, look, we have limited time and we have to put our acts together and that was enough to keep the politicians off. Unfortunately, IEBC never asserted its authority and that is why they are now messed up by the same politicians."This he said has even encouraged other players like the civil society to poke holes on the credibility of the commission through law suits and other means.Kiptoo was citing the case where Africog has gone to court demanding that IEBC makes public the audited KPMG register. IEBC has, however, stated that anybody who requires the full register has to part with Sh20,000.
