Governor Jack Ranguma has expressed concern by the current trend of police using excessive force on Cord supporters who are pushing for the reconstitution of the IEBC.
“With the strongest possible terms, I once again condemn police brutality which continues to cause deaths and serious injuries to innocent citizens exercising their democratic right. It is sad to note that in some areas the police even teargassed journalists to cover up this impunity,” he said.
In a press statement he sent to media houses on Tuesday from Geneva Switzerland, Ranguma said the use of excessive force especially in the Cord strongholds is uncalled for.
He conveyed his condolences to families and friends of those who succumbed to bullet wounds.
“We as a county government and the family of Cord are with you during this difficult moment. May the souls of the deceased rest in peace,” he said.
“You remember I waived hospital bills to those who were injured by the police during the anti-IEBC protests in Kisumu last week. I have extended the waiver to the Cord supporters injured in the yesterday's demo and admitted in our hospitals,” he said.
Ranguma further noted that yesterday, there was pressure in the referral hospital (JOOTRH) due to additional victims from the neighbouring counties in Nyanza and Western regions.
Additionally, he said, health staff were mobilised to take care of the situation.
“Their hospital bills also stand waived as I engage my colleagues, Excellency the Governors from the neighbouring counties under inter-county agreement on how to take care of similar situations in future. I wish the injured quick recovery,” he said.
