The Commission's new chairman Wafula Chebukati said they have hit 58 per cent of their target of registering 1.4 million new voters weekly in the one month exercise that ends, February 14.

He noted the total number of persons applying to be enlisted as voters has been rising steadily and expressed optimism that they would get more voters before the stated time-frame elapses.

Chebukati however attributed the low number of voter registration to drought and insecurity in some parts of the country.

"Some areas are inaccessible since residents are leaving homes in search for water. Others are leaving due to insecurity. This has greatly hampered registration,'' he said, Tuesday.

Briefing the press on the drive's progress, Chebukati said they were planning on mobile registration centres, that would be following such people wherever they go, to register them.

The Commission targets to enlist six million new voters, in total.
