The electoral body, IEBC, has moved to have politicians facing integrity questions barred from vying for any elective seat in the upcoming general election.
In amendments to the Election Regulations submitted to Parliament by the IEBC on Tuesday, the agency seeks to involve the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) in clearing candidates before they run for elections.
In the event Parliament adopts the amendments, candidates will be required to obtain a certified certificate from the EACC before contesting the elections.
“A person shall obtain and submit clearance from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission asprescribed under the Leadership and Integrity Act, 2012,” the proposed amendments read in part.
“Regulation 47 of the principal regulations is amended in sub-regulation (1) by inserting the word ‘certified’ immediately before the words ‘copies of certificates.”
The legislation could affect a number of elected leaders set to defend their seats in the August polls.
