The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has set May 4, 2017, as the deadline for  independent candidates to submit their application forms.

This, the Wafula Chebukati-led agency said, will enable it process their details before May 8,which is the constitutional deadline.In a notice published in the local dailies and on its website and social media accounts, IEBC also asked the independent candidates to obtain clearance certificates from the office of the Registrar of Political Parties, which requires them not to be a member of any political party, at least three months to the August 8, general election.

Citing Elections Act 2011, Section (32) and (33), IEBC further asked the aspirants to submit a symbol that does not resemble a registered political party before the May 8, deadline, for processing

Most of the party primaries losers have hinted at running as independent candidates, to vie for different political seats.

IEBC further set May 10, as the deadline for political parties to submit list of candidates that will be contesting in the upcoming elections.

This even as aspirants seeking to vie as Independent candidates in the August 8, elections, thronged the office of the Registrar of Political Parties, Lucy Ndung'u same day, seeking clearance certificates.
