Ruiru sub county IEBC registrar Leonard Njenga has called on the local leadership to take part in mobilising the residents ahead of the oncoming massive voter registration exercise.

Njenga said the exercise which is set to kick off on the February 15 this year will see the electoral body engage into massive voter registration mostly in the grassroots.

He said that they have started recruiting the voter registration assistants in the region who are also residents of the area.

The registrar also said that his office has set a target 471, 000 voters in the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) while in the oncoming massive registration, the office targets 45, 000 voters.

He added that there are groups of people who have been shying off from registering as voters citing long distances of their offices but they will have a chance to be served at their local polling centers and ward headquarters.

Njenga called upon members of public to utilise the one month exercise across the sub county which according to him is the most important as those that do not register as voters by then they will be striving for the last minute rush which might prove hard and leave some of them out of the oncoming general elections.

He recognised efforts by the area MP Esther Gathogo in pushing for massive voter registration which commenced last year in December 2015 and where the registration assistants would go door to door in some places at the grassroots to ensure they do not leave anyone out.

“The MP facilitated such a campaign earlier last year and we saw more than 9, 000 voters and mostly youth registered as voters. We appreciate such leaders for their combined efforts in making our work easier by pushing for the youth to register,” he said on Monday.
