The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) will be working closely with security agencies to ensure that the August General Elections are held peacefully.
Garissa IEBC coordinator Antony Njoroge said the move is aimed at ensuring the residents are well protected.
Njoroge said enough security will be provided especially in areas that have witnessed attacks attributed to Al-Shabaab in recent past.
This follows concern that the Somali based Al-Shabaab terror group may disrupt voting especially in areas along the border with Somalia in the three counties of Garissa, Mandera and Wajir.
He further assured the residents that the electoral body has put in measures to ensure that all polling stations in Garissa will be operational on August 8 urging them to come out in large numbers and vote.
The IEBC coordinator was addressing the press on the sidelines of a workshop to train election agents and officials from the county.
“We are equally concerned that these areas that have witnessed terror attacks in parts of Dadaab, Fafi and Ijara constituencies could witness low voter turnout due to security concerns.”
“That is why we are working very closely with all the security agents to ensure that voting not only takes place in these areas but all eligible voters have a chance to cast their votes,” Mr Njoroge said.
Following the destruction of masts in parts of Fafi constituency by the Al Shabaab that have crippled communication, Mr Njoroge said that IEBC officials will be issued with satellite phones to communicate to their respective returning officers.
