IEBC should target registration of up to 2 million voters from Gusii region in a bid to increase the current figure of 600,000 voters, Kitutu Masaba MP Timothy Bosire has said.
Speaking at Kiamwarimu village where he commissioned new offices of Kiamwarimu primary school, the lawmaker said he will liaise with IEBC to register over a million new voters.
He asked residents who have attained the age of 18 years to apply for national identity cards to enable the region have a bargaining power in the national politics.
“I understand we have more than a million eligible people without voting cards we have an additional half a million who have not applied for ID cards. I have already asked IEBC to register people since it’s your right to be voters,” said the opposition MP.
“Kisii and Nyamira residents have taken voting exercise lightly and time has come for us to change the perception. We have to seize the opportunity and use large voting patterns as a bargaining power,” he said.
He asked politicians from the two counties to marshal their constituents to register and avoid politicising the exercise.
“The 2 million votes from the two counties is a reality. I call upon area leaders to shun our political differences and ask our people to register in numbers because the number is attainable,” he added.
Kisii and Nyamira counties have a total of 700,000 votes with the region’s population estimated at 1.9 million in the 2009 census but the figure may have changed substantially since it was done about five years ago.
