Presidential aspirant Nazlin Umar has accused the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) of planning to lock out Independent candidates out of the August 8 polls.
Speaking, Tuesday, in Nairobi when IEBC met presidential aspirants and their representatives, Umar said the commission’s demand to have the Independents be nominated by 2,000 Kenyans who are non party members across the country was unconstitutional.
“I clearly see IEBC set up to rule out independent candidates in Kenya. The constitution is very clear that you need 2,000 to sign for you in the majority of counties. It is none of our business or the IEBC to verify that they are independent supporters,” said Umar.
Umar who is the only female candidate in the August State House race said Independent aspirants would fight in court if IEBC proceeds with its provision.
