Political rivals the National Super Alliance (Nasa) and the Jubilee Party would likely battle each other equally in the August 8, general polls.

This follows almost equal voter registration numbers, registered by the two main political coalitions in the country, as released by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

The figures and analysis released by IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati, revealed that president Uhuru Kenyatta’s Jubilee, led Nasa areas by not more than 50,000 new voters.

Both coalitions registered slightly above 789,000 new voters in their political battle zones.

This means the two, are likely to register almost equal number of votes in the upcoming elections.

While releasing the data after the one-month voter listing exercise ended February 19, Chebukati said IEBC registered a total of 3,782,089 new voters, way below the targeted six million.

Roughly, this sums up the number of new registered voters since 2013, to six million, in addition to the 14.3 million that had been registered during the past election.

The number however could rise, after the electoral agency started listing Kenyans in diaspora.

IEBC also has started listing prisoners with ID cards countrywide. It targets 19,000 prisoners.

Chebukati released the data, Tuesday.
