The political disquiet between Nairobi governor Mike Sonko and his immediate former deputy Polycarp Igathe are said to have begun last year.

Their differences started when Igathe failed to appreciate the governor's support and understand the type of management required to run the city.

Before the elections, President Uhuru Kenyatta's faction in Jubilee was uneasy with Sonko's candidature and even opposed it.

But it was DP William Ruto who stood by Sonko and helped him earn the party's blessings after realising that he (Sonko) was unstoppable in the race for governor.

Sonko then had to drop the list of his choice deputy candidates and offer Igathe the slot even though he had no political experience or numbers.

However, part of the pact was that Igathe would play the managerial role while Sonko does the politics.

But after entering office, the governor could not cede all the managerial work to Igathe because of legal limitations.

It is here that the former Vivo Energy MD failed to understand and consequently went ahead to take issues personally.

With Sonko taking the hands-on approach to tackling issues and literally being at the face of every county activity, Igathe felt shortchanged.

He later resigned citing mistrust from the governor.
