Nairobi Deputy Governor Polycarp Igathe has welcomed a joint initiative by Mt Kenya counties to revive the Nairobi-Nanyuki railway line.

Igathe noted the resumption of cargo and passengers train services would be a major boost to the city that is facing congestion challenges.

"Once the line becomes operational, we envisage a situation where public transport vehicles from Central Kenya will be dropping passengers in Ruiru Town. From there, they will use the train to reach Nairobi. This will greatly help in reducing traffic congestion in the CBD," he said.

Igathe said the Nairobi County was building rail parks in Ruiru, Dandora, Githurai and Donholm estates at a cost of Sh3.3 billion.

The county boss also revealed plans to extend the railway line to Isiolo to connect with Lapsset in efforts to reduce the cost of doing business for traders.

"We are partnering as counties and collaborating with the national government in exploiting the emerging opportunities for our people and also in acceleration of Vision 2030," he said over the weekend.

The project which is estimated to cost Sh25 billion is expected to be completed in six months.

The counties incorporated in rehabilitating the railway line built by colonialists are; Nairobi, Kiambu, Murang'a, Kirinyaga, Nyeri, Nyandarua, Laikipia and Isiolo.

"We want to create job opportunities and open markets for the rich agricultural zones in the region," Igathe added.

Area governors and other players will meet Transport CS James Macharia in the next two weeks to seek his support.
