Igegania Hospital, a sub-district public hospital in Kiambu County has attained a Safe Care grade accreditation.

This is the highest status to be attained by the institution so far as a health facility in Kenya.

Speaking at the occasion outside the hospital on Saturday morning, Deputy Director of Safe Care, Martha Ouma, said the hospital was among five other hospitals in Kenya to acquire the Safe Care grade.

This is an indication that the health institution had a proven track record of excellent quality systems and had shown continuous quality improvement in substantial compliance with Safe care standards.

“We are happy for Igegania Hospital and again appreciate it for attaining safe care level two. This is the second-highest level to be attained by health institutions in Kenya. We grade health institutions through step wise improvement model whereby safe care level one is the lowest grade then one keeps climbing progressively to level five, which is equivalent to an international accreditation,” said Ouma.

Ouma said that only four hospitals had been able to attain second class safe care grade two accreditation in Kiambu. The hospitals are Thika Level Five Hospital, Kiambu District Hospital, Gatundu District Hospital and Mang’u Missionary Hospital.

Safe Care was established in 2010 and is the brainchild of PharmAccess Foundation of Netherlands, Joint Commission International (JCI), USA and the Council of Health Service Care of Southern Africa (COHSASA) that acts as a custodian of internationally recognized sets of standards covering the health sector.
