Former ODM nominated MP Ms Sophia Abdi Noor has pledged to develop the agricultural sector in Ijara Sub-County, Garissa County when she is elected.
Ms Abdi said Garissa County is blessed with the best land for agriculture, adding that she will initiate projects aimed at transforming farming to ensure food security.
She vowed to ensure that the residents utilized the waters of Tana River that traverses the area to do irrigation farming.
The aspirant said with Tana River the effect of perennial droughts in the region will be reduced through provision of steady and sufficient water supply for irrigation farming.
Abdi, addressing her supporters in Masalani town, Garissa urged the residents to support her in her bid to be elected in the parliamentary seat, urging them to work together with her in improving their livelihoods.
“I want to commend the government for responding to the current drought situation in Ijara constituency by providing relief food. However, relying on relief food would be a thing of the past when am elected cause I will ensure agricultural activities are increased," she said.
“We are blessed with the best land that we can use to do agriculture. We can transform from pastoralist to agriculture. As a community we need to encourage and support each other. That is what I will offer,” she added.
Abdi also said tackling the deteriorating standards of education in the area will be among the first things she addresses when she gets elected.
Abdi, who is the only woman parliamentary aspirant from North Eastern has been endorsed by her Hassan Aden Sub-clan as the sole candidate to face incumbent Ibrahim Abass.
She will be vying under the Party of Development and Reforms (PDR), an affiliate of the Jubilee Party.
