The elderly say that delay in release of the stipends in time has subjected them to unbearable suffering.

Speaking today at Ikinu Trading Center, Ikinu Ward, Githunguri Sub-County, Kiambu County, the elderly accused the fragmented and uncoordinated nature of programmes, which have made some of them to lose confidence in disbursement of the stipends.

Sera Wahome, 91 said that delay in release of stipends in time has locked out her in accessing medical treatment.

“I’m ailing and getting money for treatment is difficult. I depend on the money for all my basic needs,” said Whome.

For John Njenga, 78, most of the elderly have been abandoned by their immediate families, and the only hope hinges on the cash transfer programme.

The national government launched The Older Persons Cash Transfer (OPCT) programme to cater for the elderly.

They also called on the government to increase the allocation of the funds, to enable them meet their basic needs.

They however admitted that corruption has crept in the awarding of the social protection fund to undeserving people.

They urged the government to investigate those behind corruption and fire them to ensure they enjoy their sun set in peace.
