Ikinu Women Self Help Group has ventured in a Kilimo Biashara where they are farming horticulture products.
The group chairlady Jane Wambui says that they got involved in the industry to better their livelihoods.
“We came together as a group and started this project of growing passion fruits owing to limited cultivation of the fruits”, said Wambui .
Speaking on Thursday at Ikinu Ward, Githunguri Sub -County, Wambui urged women to invest in horticulture industry.
“I am asking women to invest in this sector since there are a lot of unutilized opportunities in it,” noted Wambui.
Wambui said that the group took a loan from Uwezo Fund and started the project.
“We got our capital from Uwezo Fund. This helped us to invest in the two -acre piece of land,” said Wambui.
She urged women to form groups so that they can access the government-funded loans to support their families.
“With Uwezo fund we were able to start income -generating projects which is helping us to support our families,” she noted.
She also urged the government to increase the allocation of the fund to help more women.
“The money allocated to Uwezo Fund is hardly enough to address women needs. We are therefore urging government to increase the fund,” said Wambui .
She further urged women to repay their Uwezo Fund to help more women.
The group has 60 members and intends to increase its membership to 200.
