Residents of Subukia Sub-County have asked the government to intensify its war on illicit brews in the area saying those engaging in the illicit brews business have devised new ways to stay afloat.

They said that there are still chang’aa drunkards in the area, an indication that the illegal business is still rampant despite previous actions by the provincial administration and police to stop it.

Francis Mwangia from Kabazi said that the brew is packaged in polythene bags before it is wrapped with an old newspaper.

“You may mistake that to be meat only to realise that the person is staggering after few minutes. It’s not easy to know some of these tricks. We are asking the government to intensify the war on these illicit brews,” Mwangi said.

Others put it in plastics bottles and one can confuse it for drinking water.

Grace Mbuya, an assistant chief in Arash sub-location said it is difficult for parents to know if their children are consuming illicit brews.

“One will not be quick to question what they are drinking assuming that they are taking bottled water. You will learn later that it wasn’t water when they start staggering. It’s a high time every person to be vigilant,” she told HiviSasa.com.

She added that the impact of the war on second generation brews has borne fruits as those who were slaves of the brews are now engaging in sports such as football. They do this during their free time.

She appealed to residents to cooperate with her office by giving information on the illicit brew businesses.

“An administration officer cannot know everything and be everywhere all the time. Residents for sure they know these tricks and they should cooperate in order to win the war,” she said.
