Addressing the press at his office on Tuesday, Birik said illegal gun holders in the county will be hunted down, arrested and prosecuted if they fail to surrender the weapons.

Birik observed that it is a crime for any person to own a weapon without clearance and proper documentation from the government.

The County Commissioner said that security officials would meet on Monday to draft a notice in regards to the issue.

“We are going to give an amnesty to which illegal weapon holders will have to surrender the weapons failure to which the government will move in swiftly and take action against them,” he said.

Birik said there are people who own illegal weapons especially guns across Nakuru, a situation he described as a threat to security.

“The county commissioner’s office has received information and tip offs about people who own guns illegally and soon we will be making a serious crackdown on them,” he said.

Birik said that most of the weapons are leased to criminal gangs who use them to commit crime in various parts of the county.

He urged residents to report people they suspected to be holding weapons illegally.

On the same note, Birik warned individuals holding guns legally against using them to intimidate the public. He said such individuals will be arrested, charged in court and their licenses revoked.
