It said it will not tolerate illegal logging of trees by unlicensed tree harvesters.

Speaking on Thursday when meeting a section on Kenya Meteorological Society (KMS) officials in a Kisii Hotel Water, Environment and Natural Resources County Executive Mr Mbugua Ocharo said that weather has become unpredictable due to the environmental interference by man.

Mr Mbugua said Kisii County Government in conjunction with Kenya Forest Service (KFS) has put notable effort in the recent past to curb the deforestation menace.

This has been done through planting of tress along available rivers as well as attempts to restore natural forests such as Riyabe and Riana forests as well.

“The county government has already done a lot of work towards restoring the ecosystem at Riyabe forest and we are now focusing on Riana forest that is the main source of water for Kisii town,’ said the CEC.

On waste management, Mbugua said the County is well equipped with trucks and skip containers meant for the transportation of garbage.

“We have also engaged private garbage collectors who assist the County staff. Plans to kick off recycling of waste at our damp site are also underway,” he added.

He said the resident of Kisii town and other small towns in the area generate a lot of garbage in a day, “the county currently collects 400 tons of garbage daily,” he said.

According to the Deputy Director Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) Dr Samwel Marigi, farmers need to take note of all findings given out by the department so that they can plan when to plant.

“We are looking forward to increasing the number of weather stations in Kisii County to help farmers on matters touching on weather forecasts,” he added
