Residents of Manyatta in Kisumu have called on Kenya Power to crackdown on locals who have illegally connected electricity to their homes.
According to the residents, they experience frequent power blackouts that have come as a result of illegal connections in some households and business premises.
Speaking to this writer on Tuesday, the residents said apart from power blackouts, the illegal connections are posing a real time danger and it is time for Kenya Power intervenes before it is too late.
"We know about the existence of illegal power connections in this area. People love shortcuts at the expense of others. All we are asking for is for Kenya Power to come in and do the necessary," said Monicah Jeruto a resident of Manyatta.
"We see structures being build in the morning and by evening they have power, this illegally connected power, which is a negative effect on those with legal connections," said Christopher Owino.
The residents said they had earlier raised the issue with the local administration but nothing has been done to solve the problem.
The residents further condemned those with illegal connections terming their actions as selfish as they want to benefit from power while endangering the lives of others.
Speaking to this writer on phone, Kenya Power Regional Business Manager James Ohaga said that the matter will be investigated further before action is taken.
