Chethivo residents on Wednesday held a meeting in Chethivo market in a bid to stop illegal harvesting and sale of sand in Muthetheni location, Mwala Sub County.

Muthetheni DO1 Omondi Wabura led the gathering in signing an agreement which will saw sand selling business in the area made illegal.

Speaking to the residents who attended the meeting Wabura cautioned them against digging and collecting the sand for commercial purposes.

“The business has been going on without National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA)’s consent or advice. You need to know it is not safe business,” said Wambua.

“We are the people to bear the consequences if we continue destroying our environment,” advised Wabura.

Wabura urged residents to wait for NEMA to analyse the condition and advise them of the next step.

He added that most notorious area practicing illegal selling of sand is Ndituni sub-location.

The residents also supported the decision stating that a lot of young boys had left school to earn the quick money, as they are paid after each harvest.

Winfred Kanini a resident urged DO 1 to make sure that the rules are adhered to.

“The decision our DO 1 made is very important and I support him. However we plead with him to ensure that even the police officers in this area adhere to it,” said Kanini.
