Locals of Masalani in Garissa have raised concern over the increased illegal water connections in the area.
They say this is the reason for the increased water shortages in the area, as a large volumes of water go to unaccounted hands, denying locals at the further end this important commodity.
The locals further say that some individuals have devised ways of alternating the piped water for their own use, which makes it hard for the residents to get water.
“It is very unfortunate that some of us pay for the piped water then at the end of the day do not receive the water,” says Idi Musa, one of the locals.
They add that the rogue connectors misuse the water, since it does not reflect on their meter box and thus do not pay for it.
According to other locals, the rogue dealers may be colluding with officers in charge of water, and are now calling on the county government through the water company to address the issue.
“The county government should look into the matter since most of us are suffering at the hands of some selfish individuals who want free things,” added Abdulahi Ali.
