Brewers in various areas across the Kiogoro division Rianyamwamu, Nyaguta, Boronyi and Nyanguru sub-locations in Kisii county have been left with crossed mind as they have been traced and their brew confiscated by the authorities under the leadership of chiefs and assistant chiefs.
The crackdown based on the directive from President Uhuru Kenyatta has been going on for the better part of last week. More than 5,000 liters of the brew was destroyed and several people arrested in the crackdown.
Nyaguta sub-location assistant chief Mr Wilfred Nyakeirura said that despite the challenges they go through in the process of nabbing the brewers, they will not give up.
''We go through many challenges in the process of curbing illicit brew, such as being threatened and even mocked but the government will not get tired," Nyakeirura said.
According to the administrator, the region has been affected by alcohol and hence development has not been achieved since the people are usually engaged in alcohol production and consumption.
As per the brewers, they claimed that their only business is alcohol production and selling since they cannot be engaged in other activities, giving an excuse that the alcohol brings in quick money compared to other businesses.
The brewers have hence been advised to have alternative means of earning a living instead of alcohol. The administrator also said that alcohol has made youths engage in serious offenses such as crime and increased the number of school dropouts.
