The prosecution told the court that the suspect identified as Emmanuel Chacha was arrested at Likoni ferry where the two bags he was carrying were screened by police officers who found the rolls of bhang valued at Sh23,250.

The court heard that the suspect was transporting the bhang from Migori county to Likoni Mombasa County.

Appearing before Mombasa resident magistrate Edgar Kagoni, the suspect pleaded guilty and asked the court to forgive him on grounds that he was an orphan who is providing for his siblings.

However, Kagoni said the offence committed by the suspect was serious and there is need to keep people like him away from the society.

"Use of drugs has rendered most young people unproductive. There is need for people like you to be kept off from reaching youths in the society. I therefore, find you guilty and sentence you to life imprisonment," he said.

The magistrate said the suspect deserved such a sentence to send a warning to other drug peddlers who are doing the dubious businesses in the dark.

He said the suspect has 14 days to make an appeal over the ruling.
