A split is threatening the stability of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) after differences between chairman Mudzo Nzili and Secretary General Wilson Sossion spilled over to the public.

Earlier, there were reports that Nzili had resigned from the union amid heat from the secretary general.

But in a later statement, Sossion said that the chairman was going on a leave and that nobody had forced him out of office.

He added that a new chairperson had been chosen using the union's internal democracy.

However, Nzili has come out to deny the claims of his resignation and said he is still in office.

He said Sossion has no powers to dismiss him since he (Sossion) he is no longer in charge of such powers after becoming an MP.

He said Sossion forfeited these powers by taking the oath of office as an ODM nominated MP.

“So, he has no powers under law to write me or any other official a retirement letter because he is now an MP,” Nzili said during an interview with KTN Sunday evening.

“There are so many Knut officials who resigned immediately they joined parliament, but he (Sossion) has not,” he added.

He said the law allows him to stay in office till a National Delegates Conference is held.

“In this regard, the National Executive Council has scheduled the ADC to be held in Mombasa so that I have the chance to address the delegates for the last time and say goodbye,” he said.
