School girls in Nakuru county perform better than boys in reading both English and Kiswahili stories, a recent study has shown.
In a literacy level test conducted by Twaweza East Africa within four sub-counties of Molo, Naivasha, Nakuru North and Nakuru Town, more girls were able to read out as compared to boys.
It was also shocking that there are class eight pupils who failed a class two test.
Nakuru sub-county has the highest literacy levels in both English and Kiswahili. Molo recorded low literacy levels compared to the other sub-counties.
For example, six out of 10 pupils in Nakuru district can read a class two story as compared to only four in Molo.
This variance could however be traced to uneven teachers distribution as there are more teachers per stream in Nakuru sub-county compared to Molo. Also more pupils miss school in Molo compared to Nakuru.
The study corrobates 2016's Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results where girls out performed boys.
In the exam, a total of 16 girls made it in the top 20 candidates list, who recorded high grades nationally.
