Nyamira County governor John Nyagarama has warned that contractors risked not being paid if their work didn’t meet the set standards. Speaking during the 52nd Madaraka day celebrations in Nyamira, Nyagarama singled out the roads sector as one of the most affected due to shoddy jobs done by some contractors. He said contractors would not be paid if their work was found wanting by the county project task force that he recently mandated to assess the number and quality of the county projects. He noted that some contractors have been doing sub-standard roads, which portrayed a bad image on his government. He said it was time to crack whip on such contractors since many roads have been impassable during this rainy season. “Why do you think you should do a shoddy job? Because it belongs to the government? I want to categorically say that if your work does not meet the required standards, there will be no payment not unless you re-do the job as per the task force recommendations,” warned Nyagarama. He also called on the youth, women and people living with disabilities to apply for contracts and tenders as the law requires that 30 per cent of the contracts be given to these groups. “I want to promise you that I will offer you more than 30 per cent if you do an impressive job. So please come in large numbers and apply for contracts because it’s your right,” Nyagarama said.
