Kisii county governor James Ongwae has challenged the national government to increase funding to technical and vocational training Institutes in the county to enable them offer competitive training.
The governor who was speaking in his office yesterday evening after meeting board members of various technical institutes in the county said the Institutes played a crucial role in supplying the market with skilled technical human resource and should be given priority in resource allocation.
He challenged Kenyans to embrace middle-level training institutions and stop being obsessed with direct entry to universities.
“Technical training institutions have suffered low enrollment and funding yet they are the surest vehicles to achieving vision 2030," said Ongwae.
"There is a serious shortage in skilled manpower to manage our industries especially in the construction Industry,” he said.
He urged the national government to equip technical colleges with modern training equipment, saying many of the institutions used outdated and old machinery for practical studies.
He said his government is committed to ensure that education levels get improved and more youths receive skills through them.
