Nakuru county senator James Mungai has appealed to the inspector General of police to increase the number of police manning the Maai-Mahiu–Naivahsa Highway.
The senator argues that there should be more checkpoints in the area to curb speeding and careless driving by road users, which has often resulted into major accidents.
Speaking to the press in Naivasha on Friday, he lamented that the accidents have often cut shot the life of young and energetic Kenyans. He cited the Maai-Mahiu incident where six people perished, saying that the loss of young leaders was devastating to their relatives and the country at large.
“I send my deepest condolences to the bereaved families; all their close friends; neighbors and colleagues. The scale of this tragedy will deeply affect many people; including parents, children, siblings, relatives and friends.” he added.
According to Mungai, everyone should take personal responsibility to stop the huge carnage.
“We must ensure that this carnage on our roads is put to a stop as it is absolutely unacceptable. It is now a fact that Maai-Mahiu road has gained an unsavory reputation in the deaths of motorists, passengers and pedestrians. This means that there is something wrong here that we need to address together. As such, I wish to urge the law enforcement authorities to swiftly get to the bottom of the causes of this tragedy of accidents on this and other roads; and the law must be firm on those found to have flouted any rules and regulations of the road, leading to such fatalities,” he added.
