[Photo: Nyambura]Eight presidential candidates vying on an independent ticket risk disqualification after they failed to obtain signatures of voters endorsing their bids.Presidential candidates were supposed to present at least 2,000 signatures of non-party affiliated supporters from at least 24 counties by Monday this week according to IEBC requirements.According to a source at IEBC, other candidates have complied and submitted their supporters’ signatures to the electoral body.During the IEBC meeting with presidential aspirants at Nairobi Safari Club, Nazlin Umar, one of the aspirants yet to meet the requirements stated she would go to court to challenge the electoral body on grounds that it had not published their names through a gazette notice.The constitution in Article 137 states: (1) A person qualifies for nomination as a presidential candidate if the person—(a) is a citizen by birth;(b) is qualified to stand for election as a member ofParliament;(c) is nominated by a political party, or is an independentcandidate; and(d) is nominated by not fewer than two thousand voters from each of a majority of the counties.
