Kiharu MP and Murang'a Senatorial hopeful Irungu Kang'ata has described independent candidates who lost during the Jubilee Party primaries as enemies of the party.

Speaking on Tuesday during an interview with KTN News, the lawmaker accused the independent candidates of attempting to blackmail President Uhuru Kenyatta in an attempt to win the Head of State's affirmation.

He further observed that President Kenyatta will not be campaigning for nomination losers, adding that the party's top leadership will throw its weight behind party ticket winners.

"The President asked all losers in the nominations to shelve their ambitions and support the party. Some of them agreed and bowed out while others insisted on running as independent candidates. Let them focus on their own campaigns as the President will campaign for his team," Kang'ata said.

"I have seen independent candidates coming together and demanding that our President supports them. That is not happening because the President is our general and he will focus on his battalion," he added.

The independent candidates have formed a caucus group christened The Kenya Alliance of Independent Candidates (KAIC) with a view of stiffening their bids ahead of the August polls.
