Residents of Sofia Slum in Athi River town woke up to a rude shock after they found the body of an infant dumped within the slum on Thursday.
They discovered the body lying at a garbage collection point along the bridge linking the slum to Makadara Shopping Centre.
Athi River assistant chief Cecilia Juma who spoke to this writer on the phone said the decomposed body of the infant seems to have lied at the scene for a long time.
Juma said it is suspected a mother threw the baby in the garbage immediately after delivery leading to its death due to harsh weather conditions.
She said the body that was reportedly noted by a passerby early that morning and alerted the residents who kept milling around it the whole day was not immediately removed from the scene by the police.
"I am aware of the body, I had been informed by the residents and as we speak am right at the scene," Juma told this writer at 7.20 pm on Thursday on the phone.
Juma said they had not traced the woman who dumped the child after delivery.
