Speaking today at the prison’s premises in Naivasha, Patrick Mwenda, the chief officer in charge of the prison said that this year’s exams witnessed an overwhelming increase of inmates who have been registered.

“The inmates were frisked and checked by supervisors before being allowed to sit for the papers,” said Mwenda.

He added, “The exams kicked off well this morning at the prison department.”

Mwenda said the Prison Department has seen the need to mobilise more inmates into education. He however lamented the shortage of facilities and lack of learning materials in the prisons.

He urged the county government and the national government to allocate more funds to address the challenges facing the inmates.

“The prison is experiencing serious shortages of teachers and sometimes inmates teach one another”, said Mwenda.

The school principal Bonaventure Mutari said that the preparations have taken off well and they are hoping to perform better than last year.
