44 inmates at the Naivasha GK prison will sit for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) this year.

This is an increase from 35 who sat the exam last year.

According to the institution's officer, Moses Kodak,  17 of the candidates are serving death sentence.

"The increase is from 35 [last year]. We are all set for the exercise that officially kicks off on Tuesday."

Kodak however decried the candidates learning environment.

"We have been forced to use inmates as teachers. They have continued to perform beyond our expectations despite the challenges," he said.
