Prisoners in Naivasha prison have appealed to President Uhuru Kenyatta to release them during this festive season.
The Inmates pleaded with the President to consider them, saying that they were already reformed and were ready to serve their nation and never to engage in unlawful activities.
An author of four books Kaberia Itaaru, who has already served ten years behind bars for robbery with violence said that he was a changed man. Itaaru is to serve a life sentence as court ruled.
This plea came as some Inmates were pardoned, hoping that they have positively transformed. An act that a sitting president does as one way to decongest prisons by pardoning those with minor cases. “President Uhuru should have also considered inmates from this place. Unfortunately, the Presidential pardon committee did not pardon anyone from Naivasha Prison,” said Itaaru.
Another Inmate, Peter Kamau, who is currently pursuing his bachelor’s degree through distance learning at Strathmore University, pleaded that they needed a second chance.
“I am not the same man who went behind bars years ago. I have learnt a lot and I have reformed completely. I just want to go and be with my family,” added Kamau.
Officer in charge of the Prison Patrick Mwenda appealed to the President to consider them in their next lot.
“We have so many people who have served more than twenty years. They have been sentenced to life imprisonment, but I feel that they have learnt their lessons for the twenty years they have been here,” added Mwenda.
