More than 300 at Kamiti Maximum Security Prison are set to graduate with courses in life skills and theology.

The inmates are trained through a partnership between the Kenya Prison Service (KPS) and a Korean organisation, International Youth Fellowship (IYF).

According to Wairimu Thang'ate, Prisons Regional Commander in Nairobi, the programme started three months ago and a pilot was conducted in 16 prison facilities, nine out of which are in Nairobi.

IYF education Specialist Dr Kin Ki-Sung said the training targets inmates serving sentences ranging from six months to a year.

"The programme hopes to create leaders and role models," said the educationist from South Korea.

Speaking during the launch of the project on Saturday, Henry Kisingu, the officer-in-charge of Kamiti prison, said the inmates require the training to ensure they become responsible citizens.

"The programme seeks to arm the inmates with skills on how to live a fruitful life upon release," said Kisingu.
