Boda boda operators in Athi River town have raised concern on increased insecurity in the area.

They claimed they were targeted by robbers who eye their motorcycles especially late in the evening and in the night.

Addressing the press at his hospital bed in a Kitengela hospital on Thursday, victim Andrew Omwenga said the attacks were in the increase despite the fact that they were never followed however much they reported tothe region's security agents.

Omwenga said he was attacked few metres from Vanillas along the Nairobi - Namanga Road on Tuesday by a person who pretended to be a client.

"I was on Tuesday evening at around 8.30 pm approached by a young man in front of the Kitengela's East Matt Supermarket where I operate from, by a man who pretended to be a genuine client before asking me to take him to Athi River where I was later beaten and robbed of my motorcycle," said Omwenga.

He said the well-dressed man cheated him that he was a mechanic and had been called by clients whose vehicle had gotten spoilt near the vanillas hotel along the Namanga Road.

"I did not suspect the man, I told him my price (Sh200) for the service and he comfortably accepted to pay me upon arrival. He, however, acted as if he was in a hurry," said Omwenga.

Omwenga said the man took him to a stationary public service vehicle which he suspects operates between Kitengela and Athi River towns, went to the drivers seat and pretended to be touching some wires as if he was rectifying some mechanical problem.

"He told me to park my motorcycle near the matatu and go round to where he was so that I help him by holding some wires so as to fix the problem faster and we get back to Kitengela," he said.

The victim said a gang of armed men pounced on him with crude weapons when he went round, beat and left him unconscious on the road side.

Omwenga said the men sped off with the motorcycle as well as with the matatu, he was rescued from the scene by a bodaboda operator who found him lying on the ground bleeding profusely.

He was taken to Athi River District Hospital but later transferred to the hospital where he is undergoing treatment.

Boda boda operators from both Kitengala and Athi River towns have condemned the incident.

They say their security more while operating at night was wanting hence called for speedy interventions by the regions security agencies.
