A day after Kanu chairman Gideon Moi agreed to back President Uhuru Kenyatta’s re-election bid in the August 8 poll, details have emerged on a yet good package reserved for KANU if Uhuru Kenyatta successfully defends his seat.
These events unfold few weeks after Uhuru’s mother Mama Ngina Kenyatta paid retired President Daniel Moi a courtesy visit. The visit was followed by a second one by President Kenyatta’s personal visit to Moi at his Kabarnet gardens residence in Nairobi.
The talks between the two are said to have lasted an hour with the presence of Baringo Senator Gideon Moi; also the KANU chairman.
The Star now reveals that the KANU chair nailed a deal with President Uhuru Kenyatta in respect to the outcome of this year’s elections.
If Mr. Kenyatta wins the polls, Gideon will be appointed to the Cabinet.
The local daily further discloses that Gideon Moi’s party will be considered on “a number of lucrative parastatal appointments and plum diplomatic slots.”
KANU’s National Executive Council on Thursday made public its decision to support Kenyatta’s re-election.
Kanu Secretary General Nick Salat said the decision was reached after deep consultations.
"I went around the country to ask views from party supporters and almost all of them wanted the party to support Uhuru's re-election,” Gideon Moi said.
The Senator will seek to retain his seat on KANU’s ticket.
The deal sealed between Moi and Kenyatta requires Jubilee not to field a Senatorial candidate in Baringo.
KANU’s decision is however seems to take no one in shock due to the cozy relationship between Moi and Kenyatta families.
Still, President Kenyatta’s political career is said to have been largely cultivated by retired President Daniel Moi.
Moi nominated Kenyatta to Parliament, appointed him to the Cabinet and later chose him as his successor in 2002.
Before the 2013 elections, Moi publicly endorsed Kenyatta for the country’s top job during the burial of former Minister John Michuki.
Political eyes remain wide open for this year’s political theatre after opposition parties Wiper, ODM, Ford Kenya and ANC signed a unity pact under the National Super Alliance- NASA.
The alliance had scouted on KANU’s support as it seeks to win over DP Wiliam Ruto’s Jubilee charm in vote rich Rift Valley.
