Residents of Nyaronge market have urged the Nyamira County government to install lights in bid to boost security in the region.
Led by human rights activists Ken Miruka, they said lights would not only improve security in the region, but also boost economic activities at night.
They said hooligans and thugs have taken advantage of darkness to steal from business people.
“As residents, we want to ask the county government to urgently install streetlights in this region. It has been absolutely impossible for members of the business community to settle due to constant looting by thugs targeting them at night,” he said.
“Lights will not only improve security but also allow businesses to run smoothly in our region. We will be able to trade even in the late hours hence improving the economy of the nation,” he added.
They accused the county government of delay since the trading centre had been identified as one of the places that were to benefit from solar lights installation in major trading centres across the nation.
“We are shocked that it has taken long to execute what the governor promised almost a year ago. Delaying without explaining to us is very suicidal. We need this problem addressed as soon as possible for the benefit of every resident,” said the human rights activist.
