Security has been beefed up in institutions of higher learning in Nakuru County following the terrorist attack at Garissa University College where 147 lives were lost.
A spot check at various universities based in Nakuru town revealed a high stake of security surveillance and checks, an indicator that the universities had beefed up their security following terror threats.
At Egerton University Nakuru Town Campus, all students entering the premise are required to queue up for their luggage to be checked; they produce their authentic University Identification cards before being allowed in.
Those who do not comply are sent away, with the members of staff also taken through the same procedure and those who have lost their staff identification cards have been asked to apply for their replacement to facilitate their identification before being allowed in.
Visitors are not allowed direct entrance but instead they have to declare their purpose of visit, register their details in a visitor’s book and surrender their national identification cards before being escorted by the university security officers to the various offices they seek service.
Similar measures were observed at other local universities in the town including Mount Kenya University along Government Road, Kenyatta University Nakuru campus along Moi Avenue and St. Pauls University along Oginga Odinga Avenue.
