Civilian intelligence officers have been deployed to the volatile areas of Kibera slums amid reports of heightening tension fuelled by political animosity in the area.
According to Sese Nyamumbo, the deputy police commissioner in Kibera sub-county, the slum area is witnessing rising incidents of youths breaking the law and uttering inflammatory statements deemed to destabilize peace.
Speaking in his office on Tuesday evening, Nyamumbo warned that the perpetrators of hate speech and other criminal acts would be dealt with accordingly, noting that the long arm of the government was already on the ground.
Nyamumbo's remarks come just hours after Kibera residents engaged in protests against what they termed as 'selective justice' where opposition leaders were arrested for allegedly engaging in hate speeches.
Reports also indicate that after the Tuesday protests, a section of the slum residents engaged themselves with a bitter exchange of words on the lines of political affiliation. However, calm has been restored by police presence who conducted night-long patrols along the volatile areas of Karanja and Olympic.
